Njord is a Norse god belonging to the family of Vanir.
He is the father of the gods of fertility Freyja and Freyr.
There was a war between the two divine families Nordic: the Aesir and the Vanir. When peace was made, Njord went live with the Aesir with Freyr and Freyja, as a sign of goodwill (or as hostages?)
His wife was the goddess Nerthus, his sister, he had to repudiate the Aesir refused because marriages between brothers and sisters. So he married the giantess Skadi (she chose for her beautiful feet .... yes!)
It was not a happy marriage, Skadi preferring to live in the world of the giants of ice and sea Njord loving passionately. So they separated and returned to his first Njord happiness: the sea!
